How we got Him

The story of Blue

We had Shilo for a month when it became evident that she needed another dog to spend time with while we were at work.  We tried walking her with a couple females at the shelter, but she wasn't really interested in having another female in the house.  So I went back to the shelter to look at males.  When I got there, one of the guys working there had seen me a few times and asked me what I was doing back, and after I told him, he said that he had the dog for me.

We went to the kennels and he showed me Blue - a Malamute Shepard mix.  We took him out of the kennel and started walking him and he stopped at a bush to pee.  And he kept peeing. And peeing.  At least a minute and a half, no kidding.  The guy from the shelter looks at me and says 'he won't pee in his cage'. I continued the walk and got on my cell and asked Carla to bring Shilo so we could walk them together.

Shilo walked with him, only a little less disinterested in him than she was with the other dogs.  Carla was a little harder sell.  She saw his hair and knew that we'd have a hard time keeping it off the floors, plus she wasn't keen on getting a male.

Now I'm normally pretty low key, I don't push things unless they are important to me.  So I looked Carla in the eye and said said six words that she's never forgotten, and repeats to me on occasion:

'We have to get this dog.'

She saw the look in my eye and knew that I was serious, so we made the arrangements to adopt him.  He wasn't neutered so we made arrangements at the new vet, not the butchers that fixed Shilo.  I picked him up the next night, after his surgery.  As I was settling up with the vet, the cashier told me that if I ever needed to part ways with Blue that she would take him in a heartbeat.  Her hushed tones led me to believe that she probably shouldn't be telling me that.  Neither should the veterinary assistant, who said the same thing almost word for word.  When i went to get him from the back, he was initially hesitant, but once he saw it was me he was eager to go with me.

So we had heard that when introducing him to Shilo's home, it should be in the front yard and they should go in together.  I got home and Carla brought Shilo out front.  Blue, stitches not even dry, tries to mount her, but she would have none of it.  At least, not at first.  We found them stuck together a few times, it was kind of strange at first but they were shuck good companions foreach other that it was kind of natural for their relationship to go that way.

Carla has long since pointed out that she picked a dog exactly like her and I picked one exactly like me.  I'm not sure that I agree that Carla and Shilo were that much alike, but Blue is sweet, fun-loving and very mellow.  When people say we're alike, I take it as a compliment.

We were lucky enough to adopt two great dogs that also happened to be photogenic. Here are some of our favorite snaps.
